Hydrant Drain Meter HYD-10. Testing for depth of water level

Hydrant Drain Meter HYD-10: A reliable water leveling tool for testing the depth of the water level in the barrel of a hydrant, utilizing essential water tools for accurate measurements.

Description

The Hydrant Drain Meter HYD-10 serves as an essential water leveling tool, designed to detect the draining levels of hydrants to prevent freezing during winter months. Hydrants located in regions where temperatures frequently drop below freezing are more susceptible to freezing. These hydrants are of the dry barrel type, which means that water should not remain in the barrel after use. If water remains in the barrels after use, it must be pumped out to prevent freezing in the winter. Factors contributing to water retention in the barrel can include a leaking main valve, clogged drain plugs, or a high-water table. By using the Hydrant Drain Meter HYD-10, cities and municipalities can effectively monitor these hydrants, avoiding potential safety issues caused by non-functioning hydrants due to freezing.

The Hydrant Drain Meter HYD-10 accurately measures the depth of water in the hydrant's barrel if any is present. This water tool features a metal probe attached to a flexible twisted color-coded cable, which is wound onto a portable hand reel equipped with an electronic switched circuit, visual indicators, and batteries.

Designed for ease of use, the Hydrant Drain Meter is portable, allowing for convenient operation at multiple locations. The twisted color-coded cable enables the probe to be easily inserted into the hydrant's port cap and removed without any resistance. The color-coded wires help users quickly identify water depth without needing to reference foot measurements.

With a measuring depth of up to 10 feet, the Hydrant Drain Meter HYD-10 comes with pre-installed (2) 9 Volt batteries and a carry bag for easy transport.

Features and Benifits

- Probe can quickly and easily be attached to the magnetic base while not in use or can hang from the handle prior to use

- The magnetic base allows it to be fastened on the metal panel of a work van or any metal surface for quick and easy access

- Identifies hydrants that are not fully drained and need to be pumped out to prevent freezing during winter months

- On/Off switch conserves battery life, enhancing the efficiency of this water leveling tool

Operation

The Hydrant Drain Meter is an essential water leveling tool used to measure the standing water level inside a dry barrel hydrant. This versatile water tool can be used at any angle and can be easily attached to any hydrant using its magnetic base.

Each Hydrant Drain Meter features a metal probe attached to a flexible cable wire that is wound onto a hand-held reel with an ergonomic handle. The cable connects to an electronic circuit, three LED (light) signal indicators, two 9-volt batteries, and an On/Off switch.

The sensor probe includes an insulated gap that functions as a switch, completing the circuit when it makes contact with water. The cable is made of a non-stretch, twisted, color-coded wire with copper conductors, clearly marked in one-foot intervals.

To test the hydrant, the probe is lowered down the port of the hydrant’s barrel. Upon contact with water, the three LEDs illuminate, located at the top of the tool. A reading can then be taken from the measuring cable at the port level to record the depth of standing water.

The probe can also remain in the barrel at the desired drain depth. When draining to this level is complete, the LEDs will turn off, signaling that no water is left standing at this depth of the barrel.

For a drain test after hydrant use:

- Turn on the unit by pressing the button.

- Place the sensor probe through the hydrant port and lower it to the desired drain depth.

- Use the color code of the wire to quickly identify the depth to leave the sensor.

- Once the water level is drained to this level, the LED lights will turn off.

- The unit can be turned off when the drain test is complete by depressing the button.

For a drain test before hydrant use or checking for a frozen hydrant:

- Turn on the unit by pressing the button.

- Insert the sensor probe through the hydrant port and lower it slowly.

- The lights will illuminate when water is detected, indicating that the hydrant was not fully drained.

- Note the depth using the color-coded wire.

- If the hydrant is frozen, the depth can be identified as the LED lights will not turn on.

- The unit can be turned off when the drain test is complete by pressing the button.

To measure the depth accurately to the closest ½”:

- Use the cap’s ½” notched lines as a guide.

- Place the wire along the rubber sides and count the notches. For instance, two notches equal 1”, and six notches equal 3”. Additionally, the distance between LEDs along the rubber sides measures 4” (8 notches).
